Abstract Creativity with Sally Coulden

This abstract session will explore and put into practice the importance of being able to combine instinct with process. Sally will work with you to help you develop a clear concept, create a mood board for your painting and then lead you step by step through her process of creating abstaction.

She will cover topics such as composition, focal point, mark making, proportion of space, shapes, brush strokes, glazing and tonal colour. We can always throw in a little mixed media too if you are feeling adventurous! We will cover as much as we can!

This approach will draw on your instinct as an artist but will be nestled in process. Sally will demonstrate and lead you though different techniques and then be available to help and have conversations throughout the day. It’s a chance to really let your inner instincts and creativity loose!

Pre work – please bring a canvas that has a base colour already painted (one colour & cover the whole canvas including sides) – if you are feeling brave choose a colour you would not typically use – I often use pyrole red or pale blue as my ground.

Seascapes in Oils – With Annie Musgrave

‘Adding dynamism to your work’

Join 2023’s overall winner of the Ilminster Open to explore using oils to create atmospheric and expressive seascapes. In this workshop, Annie will focus on how to use the effects of light to add drama and dynamism to your seascape.

With the extensive coastline of the south-west within easy reach we have plenty of moody seascapes to choose from. Over the course of the day, you will learn how to start from an image to abstract key elements and add depth to your compositions resulting in your own unique response to the landscape. Annie’s approach is to encourage experimentation; mark making and play to push the boundaries of your work and give you confidence in making a start on new work.
’Annie will demonstrate her approach to oil painting using palette knives, rags, sticks and other materials and share many hard-won lessons on composition and technique. Annie is an experienced tutor and will give plenty of hands-on help and discussion time. So, whether you are a complete beginner or an artist looking for a different challenge you are very welcome.’

A selection of Annie’s work can be seen on www.anniemusgrove.co.uk

The room opens at 9.30am. Session starts at 10:00am.

James Tatum's Spontaneous Acrylics Workshop.
Feb

10:00 AM10:00

James Tatum's Spontaneous Acrylics Workshop.

I will be showing some of my methods of collecting information through a collection of sketches and then planning your painting so as to be able to paint "spontaneously" with confidence.  This will involve first choosing your subject and designing the structure and composition.

‘I primarily paint expressionistic landscapes of the West Country and wherever my travels take me. All of my paintings begin en plein air and the larger works are then completed in my studio. My paintings are concerned with balancing close observation and structure with emotional, visceral responses to the landscape. My goal is to make paintings which are physically exciting and therefore, involve experiment and risk taking’.

The room opens at 9.30am. Session starts at 10:00am.

Location; The Art Rooms, Clevedon School, Valley Rd, BS21

Members £40…..CLICK TO BOOK HERE

Bring your own lunch and a drink.

Suggested Materials:

1. SETTING UP: Please bring a plastic drop sheet and/or old newspapers, etc, to cover the floor area.

2. PORTABLE EASEL: -optional

3. PAINT: For demonstrations, I use acrylics because of the faster drying times, however if you wish to use watercolours, oils, ink, gouache, pastels, etc. that is absolutely fine. I also use acrylic medium (gloss or glazing) for making transparentlayers. It is not necessary but you may wish to try it.

4. BRUSHES: I suggest bringing several sizes, including 1 or 2 large (1 or 2 inches wide) brushes.

5. JARS: Please bring a large jars for water

6. Board/PAPER: Whatever you wish to use is fine (paper, canvas, board, etc.). If you choose to use acrylics, I recommend using heavy ( 200 + lbs. or 296+ gsm.) watercolour paper or mount board

7. DRAWING, PHOTOS, ETC.: Please bring any drawings, photos, sketch books that you may wish to paint from. Also, bring collage materials if you want to try adding texture to your work.

Capturing the Essence; Portraits in Oils or Acrylics with Tilly Willis

Sorry ….sold out.

‘My approach is relaxed – sitters tell me they have found being painted to be a fascinating and enjoyable experience, even those who were initially a little unsure. Everyone is uniquely interesting and I enjoy the thrill of capturing the essence of an individual in paint’.

She will do demos of our two sitters during the day.

Tilly has exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and has competed in the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 and 2023. She also takes commissions.

Tilly’s famous sitters include comedienne Dawn French, para-olympian Ade Adepitan and Wimbledon champion Sue Barker.

Materials

She suggests a board approximately 40x50cms though it’s really personal preference if people want to paint bigger or smaller, i.e. just the head, or, the full figure, so it might be worth bringing at least two boards if you want to paint both sitters. Primed, ready to go.

‘I usually keep my pallet limited with alizarin crimson, cadmium red, ultramarine blue, chrome and lemon yellow, viridian green and titanium white, again alternative colours are fine, it’s best not to be too prescriptive. Acrylic or oil is fine, though acrylic is easier to handle for the inexperienced.’

‘I advise against bringing flesh tones, blacks and greys as I will teach how to mix those.’

Brushes should be a variety of sizes, but not too small as it tightens people up.

Rags, water pots/ oil-painting gear

'Paint the Wild' -Inky, sketchy landscape with Sam Broughton

'Paint the Wild' -Inky, sketchy landscape with Sam Broughton

In this landscape workshop I will introduce you to a fresh and inspiring way to interpret the landscape around us. With demos and clear instructions, you will discover a range of techniques that you can apply to your landscape art to bring movement and energy.

Responsive Drawing: Loosening up your initial drawing skills is essential for laying the foundation for a more abstract interpretation of the landscape. We will use soft pencils and create sketches that explore mark-making and gesture, as well as scale and form. These will begin us on our journey for further ink studies.

Tonal Work: Second, we will explore tonal studies to develop a painterly voice. Transitioning from a sketch to a painting can be made easier by taking small steps and moving to work in black ink. Instead of stressing over colour, we will focus on the marks our tools make and how we interpret what we see.

Colour Studies: Finally, we will experiment with working in colour. This will be our final step and this is where we look at working with a very limited palette. This doesn't mean we won’t have lots of colour, it just means we can easily harmonise the colours we use. We will work on large sheet as well as in sketchbooks and single pieces.

Bring lunch and all drinks. Doors open 9.30.

Members £40 - Book your place …..click here

Materials

Sketchbooks; ‘ I use two - one for ink and pastel work and one or pencil drawing.

Firstly; ‘ I use a sketchbook that can handle water. (Standard cartridge paper often isn't suitable). Alternatively, you can cut sheets of watercolour paper into smaller pieces to take out and work on individually.

Plus another; Any Sketchbook will be ok with pencils. For the workshop bring along any that you enjoy drawing in. They can be any shape and size. As long as you can fit them in a bag! I use these ones made by Seawhite.

Plus large sheets (A3 or bigger) of watercolour 250/300g paper

Soft Pencil 6B-8B grade will make soft dark marks which is what we want. Bring a sharpener too! or. a knife.

Inks ; We will use inks on both days. if you have any at home bring them too! You can bring any type of ink. Drawing, acrylic or watercolour ink. These will all work fine.

I will be using and bringing:

BLACK BURNT SIENNA

RAW UMBER

ULTRAMARINE BLUE

CAD YELLOW

QUINACRIDONE MAGENTA

A few various pastels too.

Brushes; I mainly use a mixture of old brushes that make interesting marks. It’s all about experimenting. NOT new ones!

Outdoor Painting Explorations; With Sam Broughton

Part location based, part room based, this landscape workshop will introduce you to new ways of interpreting the natural environment.

Pour, Drip and Splash

Working directly outdoors you will be guided through techniques that use mark making to express movement, energy and form. You don’t need to be an experienced painter, just passionate about experimenting and willing to get your boots a bit muddy!

‘There is a physicality to my work, as each mark I create aims to express my response to the energy of a particular place. I pour, drip and splash the ink across the paper whilst controlling the flow by gently manoeuvring the large sheets’

Each painting is a result of my experience of a particular location and aims to evoke in the viewer a deep sense of place.

Materials

To be confirmed. (likely to be….stout watercolour paper, inks, watercolours etc)

Alla Prima Landscapes in Oils - With Hester Berry

Alla Prima Landscapes in Oils - With Hester Berry

Sorry ….sold out!

During a swift demonstration, Hester will reveal her expressive style, learners will then begin their own painting. We will look at how one might begin on a ‘blank canvas’, how to build up a work paying attention to tone and colour, how to spot problems along the way and some possible finishing touches. This alla prima approach will mean that you hopefully go home with a finished oil painting at the end of the day.

The skills learnt in this class could then be applied to plein air painting as well as further independent work in the studio. The class is suitable for any level of ability, whether you are new to oils or landscapes or just looking to hone your technique and improve certain aspects of your discipline.

Hester’s practice is rooted in traditional representation and methods, but she constantly challenges her understanding of “painting” and explores ways paint can represent effects such as light, time, movement and climate. She was Shortlisted for 2015 Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year.

Venue; The Sailing Club, The Beach Clevedon, BS217QU

Bring your lunch and drinks.

Cost: £40 for Club Members…..to book your place click here

Materials to bring along… TBC

****Landscape photographs with dramatic light and skies****.

  • One or two canvases/boards/pieces of oil paper, primed and then prepared with a ground. This ground should be applied at least a couple of days before the course so that it is dry. It consists of a thin coat of brown oil paint (I suggest a mixture of yellow ochre, burnt sienna and french ultramarine, or aim for a warm soily/sandy colour), thinned with Zest-it or turpentine. It doesn’t need to be neat, just to cover the naked white of the primer. Boards should be a size you are comfortable working on, the tutor suggests (roughly) 18x24”  9 x 12”, but this depends on how fast you work. You could also bring a pad of oil paper so you have extra.

  • A few photos of landscapes to work from (printouts are fine, but an ipad or phone is often better.

  • Oil paints – Titanium White, French Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, yellow (I suggest a lemon yellow and a warmer yellow such as cadmium yellow deep hue), a magenta, Pthalo/Prussian Blue/winsor blue green shade (a greener blue than ultramarine), Sap Green/Terra Verte, Viridian – also any extras you have or would like to try.

  • Paint brushes, a selection on widths – a ¾" flat/chisel brush, plus one smaller and one bigger to hand

  • Palette knife

  • Zest it/turpentine/preferred brush cleaner/dilutant

  • linseed oil/ poppy seed oil and other mediums you like to use.

  • A flat palette (this could be a sheet of glass or Perspex)
