Capturing the Essence; Portraits in Oils or Acrylics with Tilly Willis

‘My approach is relaxed – sitters tell me they have found being painted to be a fascinating and enjoyable experience, even those who were initially a little unsure. Everyone is uniquely interesting and I enjoy the thrill of capturing the essence of an individual in paint’.

She will do demos of our two sitters during the day.

Tilly has exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and has competed in the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 and 2023. She also takes commissions.

Tilly’s famous sitters include comedienne Dawn French, para-olympian Ade Adepitan and Wimbledon champion Sue Barker.

Materials

She suggests a board approximately 40x50cms though it’s really personal preference if people want to paint bigger or smaller, i.e. just the head, or, the full figure, so it might be worth bringing at least two boards if you want to paint both sitters. Primed, ready to go.

‘I usually keep my pallet limited with alizarin crimson, cadmium red, ultramarine blue, chrome and lemon yellow, viridian green and titanium white, again alternative colours are fine, it’s best not to be too prescriptive. Acrylic or oil is fine, though acrylic is easier to handle for the inexperienced.’

‘I advise against bringing flesh tones, blacks and greys as I will teach how to mix those.’

Brushes should be a variety of sizes, but not too small as it tightens people up.
