James Tatum's Spontaneous Acrylics Workshop.

I will be showing some of my methods of collecting information through a collection of sketches and then planning your painting so as to be able to paint "spontaneously" with confidence.  This will involve first choosing your subject and designing the structure and composition.

‘I primarily paint expressionistic landscapes of the West Country and wherever my travels take me. All of my paintings begin en plein air and the larger works are then completed in my studio. My paintings are concerned with balancing close observation and structure with emotional, visceral responses to the landscape. My goal is to make paintings which are physically exciting and therefore, involve experiment and risk taking’.

The room opens at 9.30am. Session starts at 10:00am.

Location; The Art Rooms, Clevedon School, Valley Rd, BS21

Suggested Materials:

1. SETTING UP: Please bring a plastic drop sheet and/or old newspapers, etc, to cover the floor area.

2. PORTABLE EASEL: -optional

3. PAINT: For demonstrations, I use acrylics because of the faster drying times, however if you wish to use watercolours, oils, ink, gouache, pastels, etc. that is absolutely fine. I also use acrylic medium (gloss or glazing) for making transparentlayers. It is not necessary but you may wish to try it.

4. BRUSHES: I suggest bringing several sizes, including 1 or 2 large (1 or 2 inches wide) brushes.

5. JARS: Please bring a large jars for water

6. Board/PAPER: Whatever you wish to use is fine (paper, canvas, board, etc.). If you choose to use acrylics, I recommend using heavy ( 200 + lbs. or 296+ gsm.) watercolour paper or mount board

7. DRAWING, PHOTOS, ETC.: Please bring any drawings, photos, sketch books that you may wish to paint from. Also, bring collage materials if you want to try adding texture to your work.
