In this landscape workshop I will introduce you to a fresh and inspiring way to interpret the landscape around us. With demos and clear instructions, you will discover a range of techniques that you can apply to your landscape art to bring movement and energy.
Responsive Drawing: Loosening up your initial drawing skills is essential for laying the foundation for a more abstract interpretation of the landscape. We will use soft pencils and create sketches that explore mark-making and gesture, as well as scale and form. These will begin us on our journey for further ink studies.
Tonal Work: Second, we will explore tonal studies to develop a painterly voice. Transitioning from a sketch to a painting can be made easier by taking small steps and moving to work in black ink. Instead of stressing over colour, we will focus on the marks our tools make and how we interpret what we see.
Colour Studies: Finally, we will experiment with working in colour. This will be our final step and this is where we look at working with a very limited palette. This doesn't mean we won’t have lots of colour, it just means we can easily harmonise the colours we use. We will work on large sheet as well as in sketchbooks and single pieces.
Bring lunch and all drinks. Doors open 9.30.

Materials
Sketchbooks; ‘ I use two - one for ink and pastel work and one or pencil drawing.
Firstly; ‘ I use a sketchbook that can handle water. (Standard cartridge paper often isn't suitable). Alternatively, you can cut sheets of watercolour paper into smaller pieces to take out and work on individually.
Plus another; Any Sketchbook will be ok with pencils. For the workshop bring along any that you enjoy drawing in. They can be any shape and size. As long as you can fit them in a bag! I use these ones made by Seawhite.
Plus large sheets (A3 or bigger) of watercolour 250/300g paper
Soft Pencil 6B-8B grade will make soft dark marks which is what we want. Bring a sharpener too! or. a knife.
Inks ; We will use inks on both days. if you have any at home bring them too! You can bring any type of ink. Drawing, acrylic or watercolour ink. These will all work fine.
I will be using and bringing:
BLACK BURNT SIENNA
RAW UMBER
ULTRAMARINE BLUE
CAD YELLOW
QUINACRIDONE MAGENTA
A few various pastels too.
Brushes; I mainly use a mixture of old brushes that make interesting marks. It’s all about experimenting. NOT new ones!
