Stephen Jenkins

As an entirely self-taught artist the journey of discovery has been interesting and surprising at times when things have not gone quite as planned!  I've learnt to incorporate those “happy accidents” into my approach to drawing and painting.  They also inform my observations when drawing in the “field”.  Simplicity is the keynote which I try to bear in mind when I set about a painting or drawing.

Life is full of fuss and complication, my response to this as an artist, is to pare back the confusion and distraction to present the viewer with simple forms and colours and allow the viewer to develop the narrative for themselves.

My paintings are predominantly of buildings, I love the strong shapes they make, especially in bright sunlight.  Older buildings, have, like people, great character, personality and humour, which I try to capture in my paintings.
