Capturing a Likeness in Paint with Ian Price

Ian will help you capture a likeness of the sitter and help you with the handling of oil paint. You can bring along acrylic paint if you prefer, but this course is a great opportunity to try oil paint for the first time.

As part of our new series called the ‘Peer to Peer Sessions’ which enables some of our Club Members, who are Commercial Tutors and Artists, to show their skills, tips and tricks to other members.

Ian has been a club member for over 15 years and has exhibited widely, locally with the RWA and in the Mall Galleries, London.

The course will be suitable for beginners or more experienced artists. If you’re new to drawing people or want more opportunity to practice, Ian is running a preceding drawing course. However there will be a chance to warm up with a drawing on this course, if you don’t want to dive straight in with paint.

You will be working from a clothed portrait model with the inherent exciting challenge of converting a real-life 3D breathing person into a 2D image.

The fundamental of getting a likeness is drawing but it doesn’t have to be complicated, this will be a plumbline free zone. On this course the initial drawing is actually done with thinned paint followed by blocking in the big shapes. The overriding aim is to really look at the model and put down what you are seeing. This is easier said than done but Ian will share many techniques to help you check your own work as you go so that you will then be able to apply them to your work at home.

The room opens at 9.30am. Session starts at 10.00am

Location: Clevedon Sailing Club, The Beach, Clevedon BS21 7QU

Cost: Members £40, Buy tickets here

Bring your own lunch and a drink

Course Outline:

There are various approaches to starting a painting. Different techniques suit different people and Ian will cover a range of methods.

Ian will introduce the limited palette and paint a demo of the sitter. Oil painting can seem overwhelming and complex so Ian will keep things simple with a palette of 3 colours plus white and a bit of solvent at the initial stages.

Materials

Please bring :-

  • 3+ hog hair size 4-8 brushes suitable for oil painting, ideally filberts,

  • flat palette or suitable flat board to mix on, (not a watercolour palette),

  • dipper that clips to your palette or small lidded jar for solvent,

  • 16×20 inch or smaller canvas or board if you would like to use one,

  • easel suitable for the board/canvas and whether you prefer to stand or sit.

All other basic materials, charcoal, paper, oil paper and low odour solvents will be provided. Please don’t bring turps.

Ian will provide cadmium red (hue), yellow ochre, ivory black and white oil paint and solvent for mixing but please bring your own oil paints or acrylic paint in these colours if you prefer to use them.

You might get a bit messy so dress appropriately or bring an apron.
