Somerset Open Studios 2016 Trail

I spent an extremely inspiring few hours meeting David Parfitt RI, Janette Kerr PRWA and Margaret Micklewright. There are 210 venues across the county but you'll have to plan your visit quick. The event ends on Sunday 2nd October. Further details here.

At venues 77 and 78 (both in the Curch Hall Studios at Coleford) Upstairs in Janette's studio I felt like I was stood on a stormy clifftop watching the sea crash against the rocks while I was surrounded by her energetic sea paintings which exquisitely capture the sea in its many moods. Such softness and yet power and energy of the surf captured in oils. David's studio downstairs was a delight to a die hard watercolourist like me. His paintings are such a mix of looseness and precision they drew me in. Softness, light and depth and then the energy of intense tone and vigorous lines. And then he was so kind to let me look through his many sketchbooks and wow they were a real treat. I found it hard to tear myself away. He also let me share a photo of his collection of wise words on his wall - one quote given to him by our own vice chairman Martin Bentham RWA!

Earlier in the day I called in at venue 128 at Cross. Having admired Margaret Micklewright's work at our Open Exhibition this year I wasn't disappointed by a visit to her venue shared with fellow artists Andrea Oke and Sandra James. It was a treat to see more of her exciting paintings and the work of the other artists there. Looking forward to seeing where her experiments take her.

Thank you to all the artists on the trail for making me so welcome and sharing your immense talents.
