World Mental Health Day Art Competition 2016

This competition was run last year to celebrate World Mental Health Day and ran workshops at 1 in 4 People in Weston-s-Mare to support those that wanted to participate. The theme was dignity and we received nearly 50 pieces of work.  The intention was to create new and vibrant original work for the acute adult psychiatric ward, Juniper Ward, at the Long Fox unit in Weston-s-Mare. The ward has this year undergone a significant refurbishment and the new art was the final touch on making the ward a nicer place.

This year the focus is on producing art for the bedrooms of our two later life wards, Dune Ward for dementia and Cove War, a later life psychiatric ward. There are 12 bedrooms in each ward so we need a total of 24 pictures. There is no theme or brief this year, anything that would be appropriate for a bedroom setting is welcome. The competition is open to service users, carers, family and friends.

World Mental Health Day is on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. This competition is an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health and dementia, promote art across North Somerset and produce some great art to improve the environment on a hospital ward.
