We were thrilled that Exe Estuary based Artist Ray Balkwill agreed to come and give us a presentation, but as we gathered on our April club night, none of us knew the absolute treat we had in store!
After setting up a modest display of some of his work and publications, Ray soon got down to
business and get his jacket off! What followed was a mix of humour, personal anecdotes, quotes from a whole range of artists and the room was filled with the colour and light in Ray's stunning artworks as he revealed what inspires him to paint, his techniques and the love he has for his subject matter in particular boats and his home turf (or should that be 'estuary mud') on the Exe Estuary.
Ray is so down to earth, approachable and humble about his talents, we were spellbound and all hoping the evening wouldn't come to an end...and we overran our time. Many of us went home clutching copies of his beautiful book 'Travelling Light' to help us remember the evening and relive it time and time again. Ray says he has found a new gem in Clevedon, well Ray, we certainly found a gem in you.
Thank you so much for inspiring us all. Please come again, you'll always find a warm welcome waiting for you here at Clevedon Art Club.
